H.B. Stephanos II GHATTAS, C.M.
The Coptic-Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria 

 
He was born at Sheik-Zein-Eddin near Tahta (Governorate of Sohag) on January 16, 1920 
He entered the Small Seminary of Cairo in August 1929
He attended the College of the Holy Family Jesuits Fathers for his primary studies which he completed in June 1938


1938 he attended the College Of "Propaganda Fide" in Rome.
1944 he achieved his Masters in Philosophy and Theology. He was ordained priest in Rome on March 25. 
On his return to Egypt, he was named professor of philosophy and of dogmatic theology at the Great Seminary of Tahta, then of Tanta.
1952 he entered the Community of Priests of the Mission of St Vincent de Paul (Lazaristes) and made his novitiate in Paris. 
After six years of missionary work in Lebanon, he was appointed treasurer then superior of the Lazaristes in Alexandria.
1967 the Coptic-Catholic Synod elected Father Andraos Ghattas, Bishop of Thebes-Louxor.
1967 he received the episcopate ordination June 9, at the church of the Fathers of Lazaristes, of Alexandria, and the enthronement in the Cathedral of Tahta on June 16 of the same year.
1984 after having completed the construction of the diocese of Louxor, H.E. Mgr. Andraos Ghattas lived there until he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Patriarchate on February 24.
He replaced H.B. Stephanos Sidarous who was aged and sick and had resigned. The Synod Coptic-Catholic, meet at the Patriarchal Residence of Koubbeh.
1986 June 9 he was unanimously elected Patriarch of Alexandria. 
He takes the name of Stephanos II, by devotion and affection to his famous predecessor, and to mark his continuity.
